Unlock Drama Expands to Greater Manchester: A New Chapter in Probation Support Through Creative Intervention

Unlock Drama is thrilled to announce our newest partnership — with Greater Manchester Probation Service — launching our first-ever delivery in the Greater Manchester region. This exciting collaboration marks a significant step in our mission to provide creative, drama-based support for individuals on probation, with the ultimate goal of promoting rehabilitation, reintegration, and reducing reoffending through meaningful, trauma-informed intervention.

Starting next week, we will deliver two new programmes based in Bolton, in partnership with the Greater Manchester Integrated Rehabilitation Services (GMIRS):

  • Bolton Women’s Centre – Mondays, 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Bolton Wellbeing Hub (a men’s wellbeing hub) – Mondays, 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

The Power of Drama in Probation Work

At Unlock Drama, we believe that creativity is transformative. Through carefully structured drama workshops, our team offers participants a space to:

  • Build confidence, communication skills, and self-awareness
  • Explore personal narratives and challenge destructive behavioural patterns
  • Develop positive coping strategies
  • Strengthen social bonds with others on similar journeys
  • Reconnect with community in a positive and forward-focused way

Drama allows people to step outside of their current circumstances, even momentarily, to explore new ways of thinking and behaving. It can also be a powerful tool for addressing emotional wellbeing, which is a crucial factor in sustainable desistance from crime.

Meeting People Where They Are

The Greater Manchester cohort — like many probation populations — faces a range of complex barriers, including:

  • Poor emotional wellbeing
  • Low self-esteem
  • Isolation from positive community networks
  • Historic trauma and unstable living circumstances
  • Challenges in engaging with traditional services

Our drama-based programmes are designed to complement statutory probation support by offering a safe, creative, and non-threatening environment where individuals can explore their potential, supported by experienced facilitators.

We’re particularly mindful of access barriers. That’s why sessions at both hubs have been scheduled to accommodate service users’ daily lives — such as caring responsibilities and other appointments.

What Will the Programme Involve?

The programmes will run for 8 weeks, and will be open to individuals referred by Probation Practitioners or GMIRS workers.

At the Bolton Women’s Centre, our focus is on:

  • Improving self-esteem and emotional wellbeing
  • Creating a space for peer support and personal storytelling
  • Encouraging reconnection with purpose, identity, and self-belief

At the Bolton Men’s Wellbeing Hub, we will explore:

  • Themes of hope, growth, and emotional resilience
  • Confidence-building through creative expression
  • Reframing identity in a supportive group setting

Both programmes will use theatre techniques such as improvisation, character building, role play, and storytelling to deliver real-life impact through imaginative methods.

Expanding Our National Impact

This partnership is not only our first in Greater Manchester — it’s also a testament to our growing national reach. Unlock Drama now delivers programmes across multiple probation regions and prison estates throughout the UK. With each new partnership, our mission remains the same:

To use drama as a tool for social change — empowering people to move away from crime, rediscover their value, and reintegrate with their communities.

We are proud to be a multi-award-winning social enterprise, recently recognised as:

🏆 Best Rehabilitation Social Enterprise 2023

🏆 Performing Arts Organisation of the Year 2023/24

A Collaborative Effort for Lasting Change

We’d like to thank Greater Manchester Probation Service and the GMIRS team for embracing creative rehabilitation methods and for working alongside us to build a programme tailored to the needs of this community.

We look forward to sharing updates, success stories, and insights as the programme unfolds.

Final Thoughts

Unlock Drama’s new partnership with Greater Manchester Probation represents more than just a programme — it’s a commitment to inclusive, creative, and person-centred rehabilitation. We believe everyone deserves the chance to rewrite their story. With the right tools, environment, and support, change isn’t just possible — it’s powerful.
