Unlock Drama is passionate about empowering incarcerated individuals with essential life skills that foster personal growth and rehabilitation. Our dedicated projects aim to enhance reading abilities among prisoners, recognising the pivotal role that literacy plays in reducing reoffending rates.
Our Founder Rebecca during her volunteering days helped teach adults to read at Nacro centres in London. She’s also in the process of teaching her 4 year old daughter Hope to read. So the topic of learning to read and the importance resonates deeply.
Statistics reveal that a significant portion of the prison population possesses reading skills below the average level expected of an 11-year-old. This deficiency in basic skills is closely linked to higher rates of reoffending and limits individuals’ opportunities for rehabilitation and successful societal reintegration.
In response to the urgent need for effective reading education highlighted by recent HMIP and Ofsted reports, Unlock Drama has developed tailored projects that transcend traditional classroom methods. Our initiatives promote reading as an enjoyable and transformative activity, crucial for both personal development and professional readiness.
We are committed to collaborating with prison officials, educational bodies, and charities like the Shannon Trust to implement strategies that cater to the unique needs of prisoners. Our approach includes mentorship programs where proficient readers help their peers improve, creating a supportive learning environment.
We believe in the power of community support to bring about change. If you are passionate about promoting literacy and supporting rehabilitation through education, join us in this vital initiative. Together, we can make a lasting impact and help unlock the potential of those in custody.
