12 years of Unlock Drama making a difference in the prison system

12 Years of Unlock Drama: Using Theatre to Support Rehabilitation in Prisons

This year marks 12 years of Unlock Drama, a milestone that gives us the opportunity to reflect on the journey so far and the incredible people who have been part of it.

Over the past decade, Unlock Drama has delivered creative rehabilitation programmes in prisons across the UK, using theatre and storytelling to help participants explore important life issues, develop confidence, and unlock their potential.

What started as a simple belief in the power of creativity has grown into a programme that supports rehabilitation, personal development, and positive change within the criminal justice system.

The Power of Theatre in Prison Rehabilitation

Prisons can be environments where individuals feel isolated, guarded, and disconnected from their sense of identity. Many people in custody have experienced trauma, disrupted education, and limited opportunities for creative expression.

This is where arts in prisons programmes can make a real difference.

Unlock Drama uses theatre-based workshops to create safe, structured environments where participants can reflect on their experiences, work collaboratively, and explore real-life issues through performance.

Participants engage in activities such as:

  • team building exercises
  • improvisation and storytelling
  • issue-based discussions
  • collaborative script creation
  • live performances followed by reflective Q&A sessions

Through these creative processes, participants often discover strengths they did not realise they had.

Supporting Rehabilitation Through Creativity

At the heart of Unlock Drama’s work is the belief that creative rehabilitation programmes can support meaningful change.

Drama allows participants to explore difficult topics in a way that feels accessible and non-judgemental. Themes often include:

  • substance misuse
  • mental health awareness
  • violence reduction
  • restoring family ties
  • managing emotions
  • decision-making and consequential thinking

By stepping into different roles and perspectives, participants are able to reflect on the choices they make and the impact those choices have on themselves and others.

Many participants report increased confidence, improved communication skills, and a renewed sense of purpose after taking part in the programme.

Creating Purposeful Activity in Prison

One of the most common challenges reported by individuals in custody is a lack of purposeful activity.

When people are given the opportunity to engage in something meaningful and creative, the impact can be powerful. Structured activities provide:

  • purpose and routine
  • opportunities for social connection
  • improved mental wellbeing
  • motivation to engage with education and rehabilitation programmes

Participants frequently describe Unlock Drama projects as a space where they feel safe enough to express themselves and be seen in a more positive light.

The Importance of Partnership in Prison Education Programmes

Unlock Drama’s success over the past 12 years would not have been possible without the support of our partners across the criminal justice system.

We are incredibly grateful to the prison staff, education teams, rehabilitation specialists and partner organisations who continue to support and champion creative programmes within prisons.

Their belief in the value of arts-based rehabilitation initiatives allows participants to access opportunities that can genuinely transform their outlook and confidence.

Thank You to Our Participants

Above all, this milestone belongs to the participants.

Every individual who takes part in an Unlock Drama project makes the decision to step outside their comfort zone. For many, performing in front of others or sharing personal experiences is a huge challenge.

Yet time and time again we see participants show courage, honesty, and creativity throughout the process.

Watching individuals grow in confidence, form friendships, and rediscover their potential is what makes this work so meaningful.

Looking Ahead

Twelve years on, Unlock Drama continues to grow, delivering projects that support rehabilitation, wellbeing, and personal development within prisons.

As we look ahead to the future, our mission remains the same: to create safe and inspiring spaces where people can reflect, connect, and unlock their potential.

We are excited for the next chapter and look forward to continuing this work alongside the incredible communities and partners who make it possible.
